Leaving the town of Rooiberg, riders will gradually fall in altitude to the lowest point along the route (969m) before climbing to the base of the Aasvoëlkop and the start of Bakker's pass. The initial part of the stage can be tricky with loose rocks and corrugations. Roads surfaces soon normalises, and is maintained untill riders approach Marakele, where there is a gradual increase in sand which is so typical of the bushveld. Riders climb 270m over the short stage of 41km. The stage ends at the disused Marakele caravan park at the base of Bakker's pass.
Stage 3 is the easiest stage, and relay teams should consider allocating it to their weakest riders.
